  1. It is always a good idea to have a “grab ‘n’ go” food kit just in case you have to evacuate in your vehicle at short notice. I would use gallon size Mylar bags + oxygen absorbers instead of using Food Saver vacuum sealed bags for dried food. Those Food Saver bags are designed to prevent moisture from being drawn out of frozen food, they are not really designed to be an oxygen barrier for very long. Another thing I would do is change out that standard can opener for one of those that is designed to uncrimp the seal instead of cutting the lid and I would get one that has a thick handle. The cans that are opened with this kind of opener do not have a sharp edge which means you could use empty and cleaned cans as a substitute for drinking glasses if you were unexpectedly feeding a group. I would also add a canister of Gatorade drink mix (electrolyte replacement) and a canister of Tang orange-flavored drink mix (a day’s worth of Vitamin C per serving). The third thing I would add is a plastic or metal measuring cup so I could be more accurate in my cooking and not get surprised by the amount of rice or macaroni I cooked for a meal. The fourth thing I would do is take any can with a pull-tab lid and store it upside down in the bottom of the container so that fragile seal on the can top does not get broken. And don’t forget to add a small bottle of Tabasco sauce — Tabasco makes even MREs taste better.
